Matching Grant Project # 73274
The total value of this project is Rs. 16 lakhs. Our international partner is the Rotary Club of Winslow, in District 1260 in the UK. The project is to provide facilities for the Shravana Children’s Deafness Rehabilitation Centre, Hyderabad, to travel to all the villages of Ranga Reddy District to screen infants for deafness. It is well-known that children who are born deaf do not learn to speak, although there is nothing wrong with their speech physiology. So the object is to catch the deafness in its prime and equip the child with hearing aids and speech therapy from an early age.
We provided a mobile van, equipped with an air-conditioned sound-proof rear space and two electronic hearing testing equipment. The project was inaugurated during the DG’s visit last year (2010-2011) and the two contact Rotarians from Winslow flew down for the occasion.
The van is regularly making trips into the villages and those children who are found to have hearing problems are required to come to Shravana’s city centre, where they are fitted with hearing aids as required.
